Update a plain lampshade by covering it with wrapping paper and adding panache with a bold monogram plaque. The end result is a sophisticated monogram lampshade that combines style with function, and best of all, by adhering the wrapping paper temporarily, you can change out the look as often as you like. Let me show you how it’s done!
For this project, you will need a drum lampshade. (Using a shade that is equally wide at the top and bottom will greatly simplify the process of covering it with the wrapping paper.) I used this shade from Lamps.com, which is proudly made is the USA. Love seeing that logo!
Use a measuring tape to measure the width of your lampshade from top to bottom. Now, measure around the length of the circumference of your shade, and then add 2 inches to that measurement to allow for overlap on the back of your shade. Write these measurements down.
Working on a large, flat surface, unroll your roll of wrapping paper, and use a rotary cutter and mat to cut out a piece of paper with the same width and length dimensions you wrote down in the previous step. Now, simply wrap the paper around your shade, making sure to smooth out any bubbles or puckers as you work. For a temporary solution that will allow you to change out your look later on, secure the paper with a few pieces of tape at the point at which the two ends overlap. (Of course, you can also use a permanent adhesive if you prefer.)
FYI: I purchased this herringbone wrapping paper at Target during the holidays.
I lined up the edge of my paper with the edge trim of my shade for a polished look.
Now, the fun part: embellishing the shade! I used 2 (1-inch) strips of wool felt, which I adhered to the wrapping paper-covered shade with hot glue, and I then completed the look with a fun plaque (purchased at Jo-Ann for less than $1) that I painted white before adding a vinyl monogram cut with my Cameo. So easy!
My new shade looks so terrific on the lamp base on the desk in my sewing room/home office! (I moved the previous lampshade from this space into my bedroom, which is currently a decorating work in progress.)
I absolutely love how temporarily adhering the paper to the shade will enable me to switch the look out later on when the mood strikes!
This lampshade was created as part of a fun challenge with Lamps.com in their first-ever DIY Blogger Lampshade Challenge.
Lamps.com provided me, along with some other truly talented design bloggers, a lampshade to decorate and stamp with our own personal style. I am so impressed with how many fantastic ideas were shared!
I would absolutely love for you to head over to cast your vote for my lampshade! When you place your vote, you’ll be entered to win $100 gift card to Lamps.com. PLUS, if my lampshade receives the most votes, I’ll receive a Lamps.com gift card to give away to one PS reader!
