Add a touch of creativity to your outdoor fall decor this year by creating a stacked pumpkin planter to display your favorite seasonal autumn flowers. This is a project that makes an impressive impact in your outdoor spaces, but it is easy enough to be completed in just a matter of minutes. Let me show you how it’s done!
For this project, you will need…
- Faux pumpkins in three ascending sizes
- Large urn or pot
- Carving knife
- Craft paint and foam brush (optional)
- Decorative moss
- Heavy duty adhesive (I used E-6000)
- Mums or other seasonal flowers, kept in their original container
To begin, use the carving knife to carve a large opening on the front size of each of the two largest pumpkins. Many faux pumpkins come with a hole already on their underside, but if the pumpkins you are using do not have holes on the bottom, carve one on each, as seen below. If desired, paint the edges of the front openings on each of the larger pumpkins with craft paint and a foam brush to conceal the raw edge.
Stack the pumpkins in your urn or pot, arranging them in a way you find pleasing.
The top stem of each of the bottom two pumpkins should fit nicely through the opening in the bottom of the pumpkin above them, as shown.
When you are happy with the overall arrangement of the pumpkins, use the heavy-duty adhesive to secure them together. Adhere decorative moss between each pumpkin tier to conceal any gaps between the pumpkins, and tuck some decorative moss around the base of the bottom pumpkin. Allow the adhesive to dry completely before tucking your favorite potted mums inside. I opted to keep my mums in their original containers because I was afraid the additional weight of potting soil would have made the planter too top heavy had I chosen to plant them in each of the pumpkins themselves.
You are finished!
In no time at all, you have a show-stopping burst of vibrant fall color to outfit any of your outdoor spaces.
Although I made a large version of this planter this time around, I think a miniature version would be terrific, too, for use as a lovely fall centerpiece.
