With back-to-school time here, I decided to go the handmade route instead of buying all of my daughter’s outfits for school this year. This was the first time for me to sit down at my machine since moving into our new home, and it was so gratifying to make three outfits for her that she absolutely loves!
For all three ensembles, I used patterns from Tie Dye Diva, along with the ruffled pants pattern by Portobellopixie. Although the different outfits require varying degrees of sewing experience and know-how, I would say that all three are completely do-able, even for beginning sewists.
Outfit 1
- Top: Tiered Peasant Twirl Dress from Tie Dye Diva
- Pants: Ruffled Pants by Portabellopixie
- Fabrics: DS Quilts Collection at Jo-Ann
Notes: For this outfit, I shortened the length of each of the tiers to make a tunic-length top instead of a dress. I absolutely love the way she recommends to use bias tape as the casing for the elastic at the neckline and sleeves. The blues and oranges here make me think of a fall pumpkin patch!
Outfit 2
- Top: Square Neckline Dress and Top by Tie Dye Diva
- Pants:Â Ruffled Pants by Portabellopixie
- Fabrics: Serene Circles and Serene Spa Dot at Jo-Ann
- Accessories: Rose Pin made with Whimsy Sticks by Kari Mecca
Notes: This was Charlotte’s outfit for the first day of school. I cannot say enough how much I adore this top pattern! It was deceptively easy to put together, and the way it fits is girlish without being overly babyish, which Charlotte really likes. The rose accent is a pin my mom made for a different outfit, but I thought it went along with these vibrant colors beautifully! For the cropped pants (a must here right now in the central Texas heat!), I substituted a band for the ruffle called for in the single ruffle capris pattern to go along with the banded edge of the top.
Outfit 3
- Butterfly Dress by Tie Dye Diva
- Fabrics: Juliana Horner at Jo-Ann
This dress is one that is easy to make, and the pattern is extremely well written. I think it would be darling shortened to a tunic length to wear with pants, as well. The trellis fabric on the bodice and bottom ruffle reminds me of an old wicker chair. I adore it!
If you do any sewing for little ones in your life, I highly recommend checking out each of the patterns I used for these outfits. This was my first time sewing with the Tie Dye Diva sewing patterns, and I was extremely impressed!
Thanks for stopping in today!

They all look very cute and you did great job! Couple of suggestions: in #1 get rid of bottom piece, just leave the dress as is; in #2 make pants a little longer. No change for #3. I liked the top in #2, and you can create #4 extending only the length and making a new dress. You’re so creative!

Thanks for the thoughtful suggestions, Helen! The pants in the second outfit are actually meant to be cropped length, since it is still so hot here in Central Texas. 🙂
