I’ve partnered with Plaid today to bring you this fun project idea. All opinions are entirely my own.
Taking something that otherwise would be discarded and turning it into something beautiful is such a gratifying feeling! For this Mod Podge can vase project, I have turned empty aluminum cans into beautiful vases that are perfect for displaying seasonal blooms, succulents and more. These are even great for organizing office supplies like pencils and pens! Continue reading for all of the details for how to turn plain-Jane empty cans into pretty vases with a bit of creativity and Mod Podge.
Mod Podge Can Vase Supplies:
- Empty Aluminum Can (cleaned and dried)
- FolkArt Chalk Paint
- Paint Brush
- Mod Podge Gloss
- Decorative Tissue Paper
- Scissors
- Decorative Scissors (Optional)
- Tape Measure
- Mod Podge Decoupage Brush
- Mod Podge Smoothing Tool
Mod Podge Can Vase Steps:
- Paint the outside surface of the can with the chalk paint, and allow the paint to dry completely.
- Measure the circumference of the can with the tape measure, as well as the height. Add 1/2″ to the circumference measurement, and subtract 1″ from the height measurement. The resulting numbers will be the dimensions of the tissue paper piece you will cut in the next step. For example: For a standard soup can with a circumference of 8.25″ and a height of 4″, you will add .5″ to 8.25″ (.5″+8.25″=8.75″) and subtract 1″ from 4″ (4″-1″=3″) to come up with an ending set of dimensions of 8.75″x3″.
- Cut a piece of the tissue paper to the dimensions you calculated in the previous step. If desired, use decorative scissors to shape each of the long edges of the piece.
- Using the decoupage brush, apply an even coat of Mod Podge to the back side of the tissue paper piece. Apply an even coat of Mod Podge to the outside of the painted can.
- Wrap the paper piece around the can, securing the short ends of the piece with a small amount of Mod Podge where they overlap.
- Use the smoothing tool to roll over the entire surface of the tissue paper piece so that no bubbles remain under the surface of the piece.
- Apply 2 even coats of the Mod Podge over the entire outer surface of the can using the decoupage brush, allowing the Mod Podge to dry for 30 minutes between coats. Set the can aside to dry completely before use.
- Fill your Mod Podge Can Vase with any item that suits your fancy: pretty flowers, succulents, or even office supplies like pens, pencils, scissors and more. There are so many fun options!
These Mod Podge Can Vases are so easy and fun to make!
I love that this is an inexpensive project with such a pretty finished result. This idea would be wonderful for wedding or shower centerpieces.
These sweet little vases make great gifts, too, and it is so amazing that they are made with an item that would otherwise be discarded!
