This Memorial Day, I find myself in a very emotional place, as I’m sure many of you do as well. 2013 has seen more tragedy than just about any other year I can recall. Hearts poisoned with hate have inflicted unfathomable pain on innocent, precious lives. Even Mother Nature herself seems to be on a tear, as evidenced by the horrific tornado that ripped through Oklahoma this week. It is tempting to become overwhelmed with grief or fear each time another tragedy strikes.
This Memorial Day, though, I am committing myself to focusing on the good in this world.
On the soldier who leaves his only home to stand for freedom.
On the teacher who sacrifices her own body to shield her students from harm.
On the brave individuals who run into, instead of away from, danger in order to help those who need it most.
On the small acts of kindness done by nameless individuals each and every day.
This Memorial Day, let’s all commit to show appreciation to the heroes all around us. I have created a free printable card to pass along that you are free to use for this purpose. The outside says, “You are a Hero Because…” and the inside is left blank for you to fill out with any sentiment you choose.
This would be a great long-weekend activity to do with your children. Make cards to give to servicemen and women you know. Drop one off at the local fire station, or make one to give to a special teacher next week. There are so many possibilities!
