I’ve teamed up with Plaid to bring you today’s post. All opinions are entirely my own.
About a year ago, I discovered some fun wood spice racks at Ikea that are the perfect carte blanche for storage solutions in so many spaces. At $3.99 apiece, these beauties are a serious steal! I recently prettied two of these Ikea Bekvam spice racks up with my favorite FolkArt® Home Decor Chalk Paint and some decorative wood lettering to turn them into a bookshelves for each of my daughters to hang above her bunk bed. I love that they no longer have books shoved into the nooks and crannies of their beds, and my girls love how pretty they turned out! Ikea Bekvam Spice Rack Bookshelf Instructions
Use the brush to paint the entire surface of each of the shelf pieces with the Home Decor Chalk Paint. (I have found the finished result is much better by painting the pieces with one coat of paint before assembling that it is by painting all coats once the shelf is put together.) Allow the paint to dry completely. One thing I love about the FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint is how quickly it dries! It covers evenly and adheres to so many surfaces with minimal surface prep, and it is available in 41 beautiful colors in 2, 16 and 32-ounce sizes, making it perfect for tackling everything from small craft projects to large-scale furniture projects. Plus, it is non-toxic and made in the USA, and its water-based formula means its a cinch to clean up once the painting is done!
While the shelf pieces dry, paint the wood word cutout with a contrasting color of the Home Decor Chalk Paint. Set the piece aside to dry completely. (If you don’t want a word on your shelf, no worries! You can omit it altogether, or use a different decorative element like a wood shape cutout for a certain theme: sports, animals, etc. There are lots of options to customize this!)
When the coat of paint on the shelf pieces is dry, assemble the shelf according to the instructions included in the original packaging. (I love that everything you need is included in order to do so–no extra tools required.)
Apply an additional coat of the paint to the assembled shelf, and allow it to dry completely.
Affix the painted wood word cutout to the front of the shelf with the E-6000 adhesive.
Now, use hardware to hang the shelf in your desired location. If mounting the shelf into a wall where there are no studs, I highly recommend using drywall anchors, as books can be very heavy!
I mounted these shelves above the bunk bed in my daughters’ room, but these would be fabulous for office organization, in a dorm room, or in a classroom. There are so many great possibilities!
