God’s eyes are a kids’ craft idea that has been around for ages, and chances are you’ve made a few at summer camps in years past. Revive an old tradition by crafting up a few of these with your kids this summer! Let me fill you in on all the details.
For this project, you will need…
- Popsicle sticks
- Yarn in assorted colors or a variegated skein or yarn
- Adhesive gems
- Scissors
- Hot glue
Directions:
- Use hot glue to attach 2 of the sticks together in an X configuration.
- Attach one end of a yarn piece to the center of the popsicle stick cross by tying it in a knot, making sure the knot is on the back side of the piece.
- Holding the popsicle sticks like a “T”, wrap the tail of the yarn back and around the top stick. Loop the yarn down to the right and up and around the stick on the right side. Rotate the entire popsicle stick piece to the left 45 degrees.
- Continue looping in this same manner, working all the way around the piece, until you run out of yarn. If creating a project with multiple colors of yarn, attach the subsequent yarn piece to the previous piece by tying them together in a knot on the back side of the piece.
- When you are done wrapping, secure the end of the yarn by tying it in a knot on the back of the piece.
- Finish by embellishing with adhesive gems or sequins.
Once you get the hang of the process, these little gems are downright addicting to make! This is a great (quiet!) kids’ craft activity to make on long road trips.
As a bit of historical background, these were first crafted long ago by people in Mexico and Bolivia to hang above them as they prayed to remind them that God is always watching over them. We made these as a craft at our church’s VBS this year, and they were a hit!
I love the look of creating these with a multi-colored skein of yarn!
Thanks so much for stopping in!
