Some of the very best things happen with just a bit of teamwork! I’ve had such wonderful time this year serving on the Plaid Creators team with a group of truly inspiring women from all over the country, and one thing we set our minds to when we first met in person back in February was to team up for something really extraordinary at the end of the year. Well, friends, today is the day we are revealing what we put our collective minds to do: with the help of Plaid, we created a DIY living room design with plenty of gorgeous handmade projects!
Truly, no surface in this room went untouched as we went on our DIY quest. With decor accents, textile projects, DIY furniture, storage ideas, and a fabulous gallery wall, this room is brimming with eye candy and inspiration. And, the best part of all is that Plaid is giving you the opportunity to WIN the entire gallery wall plus $500 in craft supplies to help you create the DIY living room of your dreams in your own home! Details on that are below, but first, I’m going to share a bit more about the room design plus the tutorial for the geometric painted pillows I created for this space. Read on for all the details!
This is a sponsored post written in conjunction with the Plaid Creators team. All opinions are 100% my own.
I just love the eclectic vibe of this room! We opted for a color palette of blues and grays with a verdant pop of green, and I really think it came together beautifully.
You can get the entire scoop on all of the projects shared in the space with links to each of the project tutorials over on the Plaid blog, The Plaid Palette. (My personal favorites are the gorgeous DIY coffee table by Ashley of Cherished Bliss and the fabulous concrete and gold leaf planter from Erin Spain!)
Aren’t these painted baskets by Abbey at the Cards We Drew fantastic? I love that this same concept could be used in an color scheme in any space.
For my project, I opted to combine my two creative loves–crafting and sewing–to make these fun geometric painted pillows. These are a total snap to make (truly!), and they really are a great eye-catching project to add a pop of color a room. Find the details for how to make them below.
Geometric Painted Pillow Tutorial
Supplies:
- (1) 16×16″ front panel piece cut from canvas fabric, or any heavier, home-dec weight fabric (I used a cream color, but any light color will do)
- (2) 12×16″ back panel pieces (I used blue ticking, but anything you have on hand will do)
- FolkArt Multi-Surface Paint (colors used here: Ink Spot, Steel Gray, Medium Gray, and Fresh Cut Grass)
- Painter’s tape
- Scissors
- Foam pouncers
- Coordinating thread
- Basic sewing supplies: machine, shears, pins, etc. (Don’t forget to check out my list of my must-have sewing tools)
- 16″ pillow insert
To begin, cut 4 pieces of the painter’s tape using the scissors. (Don’t use your sewing shears for this step, as the adhesive on the tape will ruin them!) Affix the pieces to form a square frame on the pillow front panel, as shown.
Cut other pieces of tape in various sizes, affixing them inside the frame to form a geometric design. There really is no wrong way to do this, so just add tape strips until you achieve a look that you like!
Use the foam pouncers to apply paint inside the various sections of the design. You can either use all one color for a monochromatic look, or you can do as I have done here and mix and match some favorite colors.
As you apply the paint, dip the pouncer in to the paint on a paper plate, and then dab the pouncer onto a paper towel 2-3 times to remove any excess paint before applying the paint to the fabric in an up-and-down dabbing motion.
Continue applying paint until all sections of the design are filled. Allow the paint to dry completely, approximately 1 hour.
When the paint is completely dry, remove the painter’s tape to reveal your awesome geometric design!
To finish the pillows, follow my handy tutorial for how to sew an envelope-back pillow.
In no time at all, you can whip up one of these beauties (or a set, if you prefer) for any space in your home! So fun!
