Think a gorgeous new table runner is beyond the scope of your sewing skills? Think again! Today I’m going to show you how to stitch a table runner any home decorator would be proud of, and it only requires four lines of stitching and 15 minutes or so of time! Featuring gorgeous new fabric from the HGTV line available now at Jo-Ann stores, this table runner will add spring pizzazz to your kitchen, dining room and more. Let me show you how it’s done!
This idea is one my mother received from a friend, who cited the original source for the instructions as the Weber County Extension of Utah State University. I used the basic method from her original instructions, with the exception of a couple of adjustments to the method of assembly. This really is a brilliant way to quickly and easily make a stunning, professional table runner!
For this project, you will need…
- Home decorator fabrics in 2 coordinating designs (my designs are Urban Blossoms and Checkered Past, both from HGTV at Jo-Ann)
- Coordinating thread
- 2 buttons
- Recommended: rotary cutter and mat
- Basic sewing supplies: machine, shears, iron, etc.
To begin, make your cuts. You will need:
- 1 piece from your feature fabric (the center fabric panel in the picture above) that is 12″ by the width of your fabric
- 1 piece from your accent fabric (the outside trim sections pictured above) that is 18″ by the width of your fabric
Place each of the fabric pieces together, right sides facing, lining up one of the long edges of each. Pin. Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch along this edge.
Now, fold the piece in half, right sides facing, aligning the remaining long edges. Pin. Stitch this edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance. You will now have a tube.
Press the seam away from the feature fabric panel. Turn the piece right-side out, and press so that the accent fabric border is even on either side of the center feature fabric. Use a rotary cutter and mat to trim the ends so they are even, as shown.
Fold the runner in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, so that the feature fabric panel is facing out. Stitch along each short edge with a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Fold the ends over to form a point, as shown, concealing the seam you just stitched. Press.
To finish, hand-stitch a decorative button to the center to secure the folded edge, as shown. Your table runner is complete!
Depending upon your sewing skill level, you might be able to complete this project in as little as 15 minutes! This is a marvelous way to add a touch of vibrant color to your decor. The weight and luxurious feel of the HGTV fabrics were absolutely perfect for this project, and I love how the body and richness of the fabrics really makes this project shine!
The options for ways to use these runners are endless: seasonal decor, weddings, baby showers and more!

I made my first table runner last month. I bought my fabric at my local quilt shop. They it as a kit and called it “The 10 Minute Table Runner”. It’s so fun to make. I made the mini table runner. It’s perfect for candles or candy dish.
