This time of year, I love to add some new gift ideas to my arsenal. With teacher appreciation week, Mothers’ Day, graduations, birthdays and a whole host of special occasions each spring, there is always an occasion that calls for a pretty, functional gift to give the recipients on my list. Today, I’ve teamed up with the Michaels Makers to share a quick and easy tutorial for a sweet denim and lace ruffled pouch that is perfect used as a pretty way to stow away jewelry, makeup or other small items. These little pouches would also make lovely, unique gift bags, too! Denim is perfect for so much more than just your favorite pair of jeans! Let’s get started putting one of these pretty pouches together.
For this project, you will need…
- 1 roll of 5″ denim
- Pinking shears (optional, but recommended)
- Crocheted lace in 2 coordinating colors
- 5/8″ Velcro
- Coordinating thread
- Pearl pendant (found in the jewelry section)
- Hot glue
- Basic sewing supplies: machine, shears, etc.
To begin, cut a 13″ piece of denim. Pink each of the edges to minimize fraying. Fold under each pinked edge by 1/4″; hem.
Cut (3) 15″ sections of lace. Use the basting stitch on a sewing machine to run a line of gathering stitches along the top edge of each piece. Gather until each is 5″ long.
Pin one of the gathered pieces 4″ down from one of the hemmed edges of the right side of the piece, folding under each raw edge of the lace as you pin. Stitch along the top edge to secure the lace into place. Pin the second lace piece in the same manner so that it just overlaps the first piece; stitch to secure. Repeat with the final lace piece.
Cut a 5″ section of Velcro. Pin the hook side of the Velcro just above the top edge of the top ruffle on the right side of the denim piece. Stitch around the perimeter of the Velcro to secure. On the opposite edge, pin the loop side of the Velcro onto the wrong side of the denim piece, just below the hemmed edge. Stitch around the perimeter to secure.
Lay the piece face down on a work surface, with the edge of the piece with the loop end of the Velcro at the top. Fold the lower edge up by 5.5″, carefully aligning the outside edges to create the pocket portion of the pouch and a 1.5″ section at the top for the flap closure. Pin into place. Stitch along each of the side edges, just inside the selvage of the denim, as shown. (You will need to fold the ruffles out of the way as you stitch.)
Fold down the top flap, using the Velcro to secure. Affix the pearl accent to the flap with hot glue.
Your pretty denim and lace ruffled pouch is complete!
These are perfect used as travel jewelry pouches, or for tucking inside a purse or diaper bag to hold makeup and other essentials.
I love pairing demin with feminine touches like the cascading ruffles and pearl accent here!
