Make Your Cuts
For each coffee cozy, use the pattern to cut:
- (1) outer fabric piece
- (1) lining piece
- (1) Insulbright piece
And then cut:
- (1) 3” Velcro piece
Prepare Your Pieces
Place the outer piece face up on your work surface.
Next, place the lining piece face down on the outer piece, right sides facing, so the edges of the pieces are aligned.
Finally, layer the Insulbright piece on top of the fabric pieces. Your stacked pieces should be in the order seen below: outer fabric on the bottom with right side facing up, lining fabric in the middle with wrong side facing up, and Insulbright on top.
Clip or pin all layers together.
Time to Sew!
Using a 1/2” seam allowance, stitch around the perimeter of the stacked pieces, leaving a 2” opening for turning on one of the short edges. Carefully trim the seam to 1/4”, leaving the seam at the opening untrimmed. Clip the corners.
Next, turn the piece right side out through the opening, using the corner turning tool to make the corners crisp. Tuck the unstitched seam to the inside of the piece. Press, and then pin/clip the opening shut.
Stitch 1/8” around the perimeter of the piece, closing the opening as you stitch.
Lay the piece right side up on a work surface, so that curve is oriented like a rainbow. Align the hook side of the Velcro strip so the top edge of the Velcro is 1/2” from the top right edge of the coffee sleeve and the bottom right Velcro corner is aligned with the bottom right corner of the coffee sleeve. Clip/pin into place. Stitch around the Velcro to secure it in place.
Finally, on the back side of the coffee sleeve, position the loop portion of the Velcro so it is aligned with the right edge of the coffee sleeve. Clip/pin into place. Stitch around the Velcro to secure it in place.
Your fabric coffee sleeve is complete!
Helpful Project Tips
How do I make sure the pattern printed correctly? Make sure to adjust your printer settings to print at 100%. You will know that the pattern has printed to the correct size by measuring the square in the bottom right-hand corner to ensure it is 1″.
What is Insul-Bright? Insul-Bright is a lining fabric that is made with polyester fibers woven through a metal film. It helps reflects heat/cold back to its source and is great for insulating projects like this one. Insul-Bright can usually be found in the utility fabric section.
What type of fabric is best for making a fabric coffee cozy? Since such a small amount of fabric is needed, these coffee sleeves are a great way to use up scraps of quilting cotton, or even lighter weight home decor fabrics. Fat quarters work well, too.
What size cup does this fabric coffee fit? This coffee sleeve pattern is sized to fit a 16-ounce coffee cup. The cozies have a Velcro closure, so that they can be adjusted as needed to fit the contour of just about any 16-ounce cup.
