Project Q&A
Where can I download the pattern for these Candy Corn Treat Bags? The link to the pattern is available at the end of this post, just above the PDF version of this tutorial.
What type of fabric is best for this project? I recommend using quilting cotton to make these treat bags. I used canvas material for mine, and although I love the look of the finished bags, the heavier fabric made sewing the bags (particularly making and adding the strap) a bit challenging. For the lining, you can use a coordinating quilting cotton print (I used scraps of a cute orange gingham), or for an even more economical option, you can use a lightweight lining fabric like broadcloth.
What are the measurements of the finished treat bags? Each finished bag measures about 5″ long and 4″ wide–just the right size for holding fun-sized pieces of candy!
If I don’t have a Quick-Turn Tool, what are my options for making the strap? You can use a bodkin or safety pin to turn the strap piece right-side out, or you can opt to use an 8″ section of 1/2″ yellow grosgrain ribbon for the strap instead.
Project Instructions
Prepare the Pattern and Make Your Cuts
To begin, download and print the PDF pattern (the link to the download is available below), and cut out each pattern piece. Using the pattern pieces, cut the following:
- 2 outer body panel pieces each of yellow, orange, and white fabric
- 2 lining pieces
- 2 yellow strap pieces
Prepare the Strap Piece
Place the strap pieces together, right sides facing, and clip/pin them together. Use a 1/8″ seam allowance to stitch along both long edges and one of the short edges of the pieces, leaving one of the short ends open. Use the quick-turn tool to turn the piece right side out through the open end. Press. Set the strap aside.
Assemble the Outer and Lining Pieces
Note: Seam allowances for the following steps are 1/4″ unless otherwise specified.
Place one of the yellow rectangle pieces face up on a work surface. Place one of the orange rectangle pieces face down on the yellow piece so the right sides of each piece are facing; clip or pin together along one of the long sides. Stitch the pieces together along the clipped/pinned edge.
Align a white rectangle piece along the opposite long edge of the orange section so the right sides are facing. Clip/pin the pieces together at their long edge, and stitch the pieces together.
Press both seams open. You should now have an assembled piece comprised of yellow, orange, and white sections. Repeat the steps above to make one more piece like this one.
Using the triangle pattern piece as a template, align the top edge of the triangle with the top edge of the yellow sections on each assembled outer piece, and trace around the triangle with the washable marking pen. Cut each triangle out.
Place these triangles together, right sides facing, so the colored stripes on each side are aligned. Clip/pin along the side edges. Stitch along these edges, pivoting at the bottom point and leaving the top edge open. Pin the lining pieces together, right sides facing, and stitch together in the same way.
Turn the striped outer piece right-side out and press.
Join the Outer and Lining Pieces and Add the Strap
Insert the striped outer piece into the top opening of the lining piece. Making sure the top edges and side seams of each piece are aligned, pin/clip the two sections together along the top edge.
On one side of the pinned pieces, make a line of stitching along the pinned edge, starting and stopping approximately 3/4″ from each side seam. Flip the piece over and repeat to create another line of stitching on the other side. Turn the piece right-side out through one of the side openings, tucking the lining down into the bag.
Fold the raw edges of the side openings down 1/4″ toward the inside of the openings. Press. Tuck one end of the strap down about 1/2″ into each opening, so that strap ends are centered with the side seams. Use a pin to anchor the strap ends and close the openings.
Topstitch 1/8″ around the top perimeter of the bag, closing the side openings and securing the strap into place as you sew.
All finished!
Since each bag takes about 15 minutes to sew, in no time at all, you can make enough of these cute candy corn treat bags to use as favors for your next Halloween party. These are terrific for school parties!
