To begin, use the craft paint and foam brush to paint the entire outer ring of the embroidery hoop. Allow to dry completely. (There is no need to paint the inner ring of the hoop, as it will be concealed by the fabric later on.) When the paint is dry, fit the piece of fabric into the hoop, stretching it completely taut. Tighten the clamp at the top of the hoop to secure.
Trim around the entire perimeter of the fabric 1/2″ outside of the edge of the hoop, as shown. (I prefer to use pinking shears for this step to minimize fraying, but standard shears will work fine, too.)
Overlap the excess fabric toward the back of the hoop, and secure with hot glue, as shown.
Apply a number of very small dabs of hot glue to the back of the doily piece, and center it on the front of the stretched fabric in the embroidery hoop, pressing gently to secure.
Using the pin back on the brooch, secure the cameo to the piece, centering it on the doily as shown. Finish the project by tying a piece of baker’s twine in a bow around the top metal clamp.
Your Cameo Embroidery Hoop is Complete!
I love the vintage feel of the cameo here along with the delicate crocheted doily. A pair of these would look lovely used as bookends, or a single one would be a terrific accent to a gallery wall.
The red, white and blue color scheme created here with the blue and white ticking fabric, the red painted hoop and the white doily makes this a perfect patriotic project for summer, too!
