In high school, I was privileged to be the chosen soloist for the National Anthem each year at the Boy Scouts of America awards banquet in my city. What struck me most about that event was the immense sense of camaraderie among the members, and the sense of pride that was so evident in each Scout present. Even back then, long before I had children of my own, I knew that was an organization I would someday love my future son to be a part of. I am already looking forward next year to signing Jack up for Cub Scouts!
New school years can be a daunting time for kiddos, with new teachers, new subjects and new friends. An extracurricular activity like scouting can be just the ticket for instilling a sense of confidence in a boy and exposing him to a new set of experiences that allows him to excel in the classroom and beyond. There is something so wholesome about a program that teaches boys of all ages lessons in life and relationship skills that have endured for decades. Not only that, but in addition to the knot-tying and camping that so many of us associate with Boy Scouts, a new scouting curriculum has been developed with an emphasis on STEM: science, technology, engineering and math.
If scouting sounds like something you would love your son to be a part of, I encourage you to check out the information on the Boy Scout website for how to Be A Scout.

I’ve been working as a Cub Scout leader for the last couple of years and I love it. I love all that Scouts does to make boys into good men. I love all the different interests my family has been exposed to because of Scouts. This is my favorite way to serve my community.

I agree about Boy Scouts! My boyfriend is a former eagle scout and he’s an assistant troop leader now. But working on his wood badge to become a full fledged leader. I’m so proud of him and tell him all the time I need one of those bumper stickers that says I’m proud of my eagle scout. It is all girls in my family so I never had the chance to be around boy scouts until now. And I’ve had the chance to get to know some great young men.
