It is often said that black cats bring bad luck, but today I’m sharing some cute little kitties that are sure to scare up nothing but fun! These adorable black cat softies require just two small scraps of fabric and about a half hour or so to make, and they are perfect for using as a fun Halloween decoration, or for giving to a special little boy or girl as a candy-free Halloween treat. Or, stitched up in other fun colors, they are terrific as a perfect little token for a cat lover on absolutely any day of the year! Today I’m going to provide you with the free PDF pattern so you can stitch up one of these little guys for yourself, and I’ll also walk you through the entire sewing process. Let’s get started!
Black Cat Softie Supplies:
-
Black Cat Softie PDF Pattern << Click link for free download
- (2) 8.5×11″ black and/or black and white fabric scraps (I recommend using heavy fabrics such as canvas and twill, as this gives the finished project more stability)
- Coordinating thread
- Fiber fill
- Hand sewing needle
- Ribbon
- Basic sewing supplies: shears, machine, etc.
To begin, download the print the PDF black cat softie pattern using your computer. (I recommend printing onto white cardstock for a durable, reusable pattern piece.)
Use the pattern to cut out 1 front and 1 back piece. Pin the pieces together, right sides facing, aligning all raw edges.
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch around the perimeter of the pinned pieces, leaving a 2 inch opening on the back side of the front leg, as shown.
Use shears to clip the corners and notch the curves. Turn the piece right-side out through the opening, and thoroughly turn out all of the nooks and crannies. (Be sure to check out my very favorite tool for doing so. Affiliate Link)
Stuff with fiber fill, using a chopstick or similar to poke up and into the hard-to-reach tail, ears and legs. Hand stitch the opening closed. (For help with this step, don’t miss my easy-to-follow ladder stitch tutorial.)
Finally, tie a festive bow around kitty’s neck.
Your black cat softie is complete!
A tried-and-true all-black cat is definitely adorable…
…but I love the look of using kicky black and white fabrics, like this houndstooth, too! (And, of course, these kitties would be adorable in any other color to be enjoyed the whole year through!)

Love your black cats – every one of them! Thanks so much for sharing your pattern. I plan on making some of these for my granddaughter who loves her cats. She “rescues” one every year or two!

I actually made one! That’s probably the first time I’ve just dove right in and made a project I’ve seen on line. I just felt li would be easy and I was right, it was easy. The hardest thing was turning the fabric right side out! I made it with some orange and black plaid fabric and found the perfect Boo! ribbon for the neck. My grandbaby loved it. Just wanted to say thank you for the free pattern.
