DIY Pegboard Craft Organizer

Now that we are settled nicely into our new home, I have have finally started to get to the important business of setting up my creative space. Before adding any of the the pretty details, I decided to put first things first in my new sewing and crafting haven: organization! By far, my favorite organizational project I’ve completed for the space so far is my pegboard crafting tool storage center. This is a project that can easily be completed from start to finish in one day, and I have already been amazed at how much having my tools stored in plain sight has simplified my creative projects. Let me show you how to make a framed pegboard craft organizer of your own, in any size that suits your space!

For this project, you will need…

• (1) piece of pegboard in the size of your choice
• (2) 1×2″ strips cut to the width of your board
• (2) trim (frame) pieces cut to the width of your board 
• (2) trim (frame) pieces cut to the length of your board 
• Miter box and saw
• Fine-grit sandpaper
• Self-priming spray paint in two colors
• Wood glue
• Wood screws
• Drill
• Level
• Assorted pegboard hanging accessories

Note: The basic assembly and hanging process I used for this pegboard is identical to the one I used in my garage pegboard project, with one modification: instead of mounting 3 cross-wise 1×2″ strips on the wall in order to hang my board, this time I only mounted 1 across the top. Directions

• To begin, miter the corners of the trim strips so they will come together in a nice 45-degree joint at each of the corners of the board. Sand the edges of the sawed edges smooth and wipe clean.
• Spray paint the board and the outer trim pieces with 2-3 coats of paint and allow to dry completely.
• Affix the outer trim pieces around the perimeter of the pegboard piece to form a frame, and affix with wood glue. Allow to dry completely.
• Flip the board over, and mount 1 of the 1×2″ strips along the lower edge of the board with wood glue, making sure to apply the glue so it doesn’t seep through any of the holes on the front of the board. Allow to dry completely.
• Use the drill and wood screws to mount the remaining 1×2″ strip into the studs in the wall where you wish to hang the board, placing it at a height just below where you want the top edge of the pegboard to hang. (This height difference will compensate for the width of the frame at the top of the board.) Be sure to use a level to ensure your board is hung nice and straight! Drill pilot holes through the points where you will mount the board, and then mount the completed board on this strip with wood screws. 
• Place the hanging accessories on the board, and start organizing your craft supplies!

In no time at all, you can have a veritable creative command station to house anything from crafting tools and supplies to sewing notions, ribbon, and more. The sky really is the limit!

I have plenty of space to hang my various scissors, punches and snips…

…and I left a spot at the center to hang my paper trimmers.

At the bottom, my adhesive roller and glue gun are right at home, and I used two hooks to hang galvanized buckets from the dollar section at Target to hold glue sticks and small paper punches.

I can’t say enough what this one little project has done to utilize the vertical, underutilized space in my creative room!
