My tip is before you shop for new accessories, clean out a closet and shop your house. I recently installed a shelf that needed a few extras to make it complete. A tip around my house looking for like and coordinating gave me more than enough accessories to swap in and out until I had a nicely styled shelf – for free.

What a great tip! And I have found having a fresh set of eyes to take inventory of items you own (a friend, family member, etc.) can help you see entirely new ways to utilize things.

Thank you so much, Yvonne! It really is something I’ve started to strive for just in the last few years, to focus on being intentional in my shopping. It adds so much more meaning to a home!

These are great tips, Amy! I echo your thoughts about using things you already own in new and different ways. Love that you used your china in that mantelscape–that’s the perfect example!
I think it’s fun to observe whether you might have a number of similar items you’ve collected over the years. If so, they can add a lot of punch to your decor when they’re displayed all together.
It’s also great fun to keep those things that were once very special and re-purpose them later. For instance, I have my boys’ baby saddle oxfords displayed on a bookshelf (all three boys wore this same pair of shoes)! They look adorable as “sculpture,” and they make me smile every time I see them. And just this week I cut up a vintage tablecloth that had grown too ragged to use as a tablecloth any longer. I framed a couple of pieces of it to make some custom wall art, and I think it’s beautiful. 🙂
Love your example that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to create a lovely space.

Love your tips!! I am very quick to get rid of stuff…I’m the opposite of a hoarder. I get rid of anything I haven’t used in the past 3 months. There has been stuff I regretted getting rid of, but I’m learning. I recently started saving stuff and repurposing. I love the feeling of reusing things in a different way. By the way, I love those pots!!
