In the last 12+ years that my husband and I have been married, we have moved our fair share of times through our fair share of states. It’s been quite the adventure! For this month’s Michael’s Makers challenge, we Makers were given the assignment to put a personal, creative spin on any project of our choosing, and when I happened upon this fun United States wood pallet sign from the new Alphabet Soup line at Michaels, I knew without a doubt that this would be the perfect way to pay homage to all of the many homes we have shared over the course of our marriage! This United States home string art sign took me just 15 minutes or so to personalize, and I absolutely love how it turned out. Let me fill you in on all the details.
This post is brought to you by Michaels and the Michaels Makers team. All opinions are entirely my own.
For this United State home string art project, you will need…
- United states pallet sign
- Pencil
- Nails (as many needed for the number of cities/places you’ve lived)
- Hammer
- Hemp cording
- Metallic gold Sharpie paint pen
- Wood letters: H, M, E
- Red metal heart shape
- Hot glue
To begin, use a pencil to designate a dot to represent all of the cities/towns you’ve called home.
Using a hammer, carefully drive a nail into each dot, making sure the nail doesn’t poke out of the back of the sign.
Tie a small knot into one end of the hemp cording, and tighten it around the nailhead representing the first city you’ve called home. Pull the cording over to the nail representing city #2, and wrap the cording snugly around the top of the nail. Continue to wrap the remaining nails in a similar fashion, finishing by securing the cording with a knot around the nail representing your current city.
If desired, use a paint pen to embellish the path of the twine/nails, using arrows to designate the path your moves have taken you, and outlining the position of each city with a circle or star. This step is optional, but it really adds personality to the project!
Finally, use hot glue to affix the “HOME” lettering to the top of the piece. Depending upon where you’ve happened to reside, you might have to position your wording different from mine, but it just so happens we have always lived in the south, so my wording fit perfectly on the top of the piece.
That’s all there is to it! In no time at all, you’ve got a perfectly personalized, meaningful reminder of all of the places you’ve lived over the years!
Even if you haven’t moved around a lot as a couple, another fun idea would be to make a mark for each place you and your significant other were born/raised, and then add another mark for the place you live now. This would be a really fun wedding gift idea for a new couple!
And, of course, if you are single, this would be a fun project to highlight your own personal journey, too!
The best part about crafting is putting your own spin on a project.
