Halloween Mantel

I don’t know who is more excited about Halloween this year: my kids or me! There truly are few things that bring me more joy as a parent than experiencing all of the holidays I love so much through the eyes of my precious children, and there are only a handful of days each year that are as enchanting for little ones as Halloween.
In putting together my Halloween mantel this year, I wanted to convey a whimsical, not-too-scary sensibility, and I wanted it to reflect the magic of Halloween as seen through the eyes of my children. I can’t wait to show you how it all came together!

My springboard for this display was a quote I discovered in the Halloween issue of Celebrate Magazine, which came from a poem called “Rock Me to Sleep” by Elizabeth Akers Allen.
Backward, turn backward,
O Time, in your flight,
Make me a child again
Just for tonight!

The poem leapt off the page to me in such a dynamic way that I knew I had to incorporate it somehow into my Halloween decor, and so I made a printable version of it to frame as the anchor object for my display.

Instead of the traditional black and orange color scheme, I found myself gravitating toward a palette of black and lime green, along with notes here and there of antique brass and gold. I had fun putting together a number of craft projects for the display.
A polka-dotted witch’s hat (the how-to for this is coming soon) sits on top of one of my decoupaged lace pumpkins, which I elevated on some fun stands from Hobby Lobby…
…and my creepy bottle of “Powdered Vampyre Fangs” adds another playful touch.
To go along with the black felt spiderwebs from the dollar store that I used in the display, I added a lot of spider-related elements, too. I had so much fun making these beaded spiders, which I perched on top of a green (could it be poison?) apple…
…as well as on my Spiderweb Embroidery Hoop Art. (You can see the sequin-covered balls from my Sequin Teacup Topiaries peeking out in the photos above and below.)

I couldn’t resist adding these brass owl figurines to the mix, which I inherited from my husband’s grandmother. Isn’t it amazing how vintage items like these look so current now?

I rounded things out with my Halloween Countdown “Trick or Tree,” which I know is going to be a hit with all of my children this year!

    Love the green and black! There’s not a hint of orange yet this is Halloween – full throttle!! The quote is marvelous – I may hold onto it for Christmas Eve. The sentiment works perfectly there too.I love you lace-covered pumpkins – very pretty.

    AMY! This is absolutely darling. I just love that poem–you know people will be thrilled to get that printable! Your whole mantel looks great. I like Halloween, but don’t like things to be too scary or spooky. This strikes just the right note!
