I love digging through the PS archives for project inspiration. A couple of years ago, I shared a tutorial for a Simple Ruffled Wreath that is one of my favorite ways to punch up a plain-Jane wreath form. I was in the market for a new wreath for my kitchen, and I immediately thought of that tutorial. Those yummy ruffles coupled with some of the Vintage Lace Brooches I shared last month come together for a romantic, yet vibrant, wreath that exudes just the homespun feel I was going for. Let me show you how I made it!
For this project, you will need…
A wreath form
Fabric (I used two designs)
Crocheted lace, 1 to 1.5 yards
Eyelet lace, 1 to 1.5 yards
Buttons, brooches, or other embellishments
Hot glue
Optional, but recommended: Rotary cutter and mat
To begin, cut your main fabric into strips. For this wreath, I cut my strips to 1.5″.
Set your sewing machine to its highest tension setting and its longest stitch length for easy ruffling. Stitch close to one edge of the strips, and the fabric will magically gather as you sew! (For the full scoop on this technique, check out my Cheater Ruffling Method post.)
When your strips are gathered, use them to cover your wreath form, wrapping the strips around the wreath, as shown. Use hot glue to secure the strips every three wraps or so, so that they don’t shift out of place later on. With your eyelet lace, make two gathered rosettes using the method in my Vintage Lace Brooch tutorial. For each of my rosettes, I used approximately 18 inches of lace. Affix these rosettes to your wreath with hot glue.
Use the same method to make 2-3 rosettes with your crocheted lace. Affix these to the wreath on top of your eyelet lace rosettes. Then, adhere decorative buttons, rhinestone brooches, or other pretty embellishments to the centers of those rosettes as a finishing touch.
Tie a pretty bow from a 3-inch strip of coordinating fabric and affix it to the top of your wreath…
…and you’re all finished!
I love the feminine feel of this wreath juxtaposed against the more masculine woodgrain pattern of the fabric bow.
The layers of lace rosettes are definitely the star of the show here…
…but the rows and rows of yummy ruffles are pretty in their own right!
